School Sponsored Courses

The SENG offers a number of School-sponsored courses that are opened to all HKUST undergraduates students. A full listing and description of the SENG’s School-sponsored courses can be found from the HKUST Program and Course catalog. E2I provides support in the delivery of some these courses. New ideas on innovative teaching and assessment strategies aim at improving student learning are also implemented in a few of these classes.

Academic Orientation (ENGG 1010)

Academic Orientation is a year-long course sponsored by the School of Engineering. This is a required course for all first-year 4Y curriculum students. Students will be introduced to the School of Engineering and examine the purposes of university and engineering education through this course. The learning objectives of this course include developing students’ learning and time-management skills, and facilitating the planning of their personal and professional development.

Engineering Solutions to Grand Challenges of the 21st Century (ENGG 1110)

Engineering Solutions to Grand Challenges of the 21st Century is a newly introduced course in the School of Engineering. Students who take this course will be exposed to examples of the major challenges of the 21st century and the issues involved. By working in teams, they will explore various approaches that are or have been proposed around the world to address or attempt to tackle these problems. By completing the course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the key issues involved in two real-world engineering problems by obtaining information from experts and literature.
  2. Analyze these problems from multiple dimensions and angles including feasibility, scalability, and sustainability.
  3. Suggest and evaluate solutions to these problems by working collaboratively.
  4. Present and defend their solutions orally and in writing.

The course adopts collaborative problem-solving through enquiry as its main pedagogy. Students, working in teams which include peer team coaches, solve two open-ended problems (i.e., grand challenges) posed by experts and present solutions both orally and in writing. E2I is actively supporting the course through providing in-class and out-of-class backup, expert advice on pedagogy, assessment of learning outcomes, and education research. This course offers an excellent opportunity to develop learning communities for both faculty and students.

The Impact and Value of Technology Innovation (ENGG 1130)

The focus of this course is on the impact of the current technological evolution on the creation of value in the global economy, society in general, and personal lives. Students will study how science and technology developments have been transformed into innovative products and services. Case studies and examples will be drawn from well-known successes and failures of technology companies in Silicon Valley and Asia. Business issues such as marketing of disruptive innovations and ethics will be explored. Special emphasis will be given to intellectual property issues. Students will do extensive research to understand future as well as existing technology innovations. From the course material, the students will find inspiration, greater clarity and personal sense of purpose. This will help them create choices for themselves and their lives in this world of accelerated technology development.

Information Technology Revolution: Past, Present and Future (ENGG 1150)

This course introduces the basic concepts in information technology and explores the many applications of information technology in our daily life from consumer electronics to internet to various sectors including medicine, business, and social networking, etc. Key technology breakthroughs throughout the development of information technology and its impact to various aspect of our society will be studied. These include the invention of the 1st transistor, concept of computing machine, representation of information in digital formats, miniaturization via VLSI technology, electronic communications from emails, mobile phones, sms, to video skype, imaging technologies in medical field, internet and social networking, image and video technology and websites like youtube, etc. The focus is to identify the key technological advances in information technology and understand how these advances led to revolutionary changes in our life and society.
